The story

Chutney Masala – Irvington, NY: Michelin Bib Gourmand Indian Bistro

Origin & Chef

Chutney Masala opened its doors in 2008, the vision of chef-entrepreneur Navjot Arora and his wife Anu. A graduate of a prominent Indian culinary institute, Navjot honed his craft at the Taj Group of Hotels before leading the kitchen at the critically acclaimed Café Spice Restaurant Group in New York. His deep understanding of Indian cooking is rooted in tradition yet open to contemporary interpretation – a balance that earned the restaurant a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2026, recognizing good quality, good value cooking.

The Food

The name tells the story: “chutney,” a fresh relish made in-house using family recipes from across the Indian subcontinent, and “masala,” a custom blend of spices ground from scratch. Navjot uses spices not for heat alone but to unlock the complex layers of traditional Indian cuisine. The kitchen prioritizes quality ingredients: antibiotic-free chicken, free-range lamb, wild seafood, non-bromated organic flour, and local farm-fresh produce. The tandoori clay oven, reaching 700°F, delivers healthier grilled options like marinated meats and vegetables. The menu ranges from street-food specials such as Pani Poori and Pao Bhaaji to robust entrees like Kozhi Vartha Kari (coconut chicken curry) and Dal Makhani, with ample vegetarian and vegan choices.

Ambiance & Design

The restaurant’s interior pays homage to the British Raj era, when Indian flavors first traveled the world. Designed by Tarik Currimbhoy, the space features hand-blown glass fixtures, antique mirrors, handmade tile bar tops, and green banquettes. Vintage photographs by renowned Indian photographer Raja Deen Dayal line the walls, evoking a time when traditional and modern met. The result is a warm, refined setting that feels both historic and welcoming – an ideal backdrop for the thoughtful Indian fare at the heart of Chutney Masala.
