The story
J-Bar-M Barbecue is a Houston BBQ destination that blends tradition with a modern, welcoming spirit. The story begins with Mr. Toomey, who built his first barbecue pit in his backyard at age 12 using bricks from a nearby construction site. Decades later, in 2021, he opened J-Bar-M in Houston’s EaDo neighborhood, realizing a lifelong dream. The restaurant has quickly earned its place among the city’s top BBQ spots, a fact recognized by the Michelin Guide, which awarded it a Recommended distinction.
At the heart of the operation is the Pit Room, where Central Texas-style brisket and house-made sausage are the stars. The team uses four 1,000-gallon offset steel barrel smokers, custom-built by Moberg Smokers, to cook over Post Oak wood. The result is meat infused with a rich, smoky aroma that defines the best of Texas BBQ.
Beyond the smoker, J-Bar-M offers a full experience. The property includes a main dining room that seats 150, a private dining room, and a covered beer garden with a 16-foot stage for live music. The team describes the atmosphere as "a little bit of tradition, a little bit of country, a little bit of rock 'n roll." Weekend brunch is served from 11-3, offering grilled dishes hot off the grates. The restaurant is also pet-friendly, with an enclosed dog park for outdoor dining with your four-legged companion.
J-Bar-M positions itself as more than a BBQ joint—it’s a family-run space for gatherings, from private parties to large catered events. Whether you’re there for the brisket, the live music, or the beer garden, the focus remains on quality, originality, and attention to detail.
