The story
Rêve Bistro is the kind of classic, everyday neighborhood French bistro you’d imagine in Saint Michel or Saint Germain – except it’s in Lafayette, California. Chef Paul Magu-Lecugy, who trained under Alain Ducasse and worked at Michelin-starred restaurants in Paris and San Francisco, opened Rêve in 2016 with his wife Laura. Their vision: a cozy spot serving impeccable French comfort food without the fuss. The Michelin Guide has recognized Rêve with a Recommended status for multiple years, including 2026, calling out its warm hospitality and consistent cooking.
The menu stays true to bistro classics: authentic French onion soup, steamed mussels, steak frites, cassoulet, and seasonal desserts. The kitchen, now led by chef de cuisine Daniel Zeibell (formerly of Thomas Keller’s Ad Hoc), focuses on dishes that feel both familiar and refined. The dining room is intimate, and the award-winning garden patio – fully enclosed with heaters for winter – offers outdoor seating year-round. Rêve keeps things relaxed: kids are welcome, and you don’t need to dress up. Stop by for an apéritif and pâté, or an espresso and tarte after the movies.
Paul and Laura Magu-Lecugy run the front and back of house with a dedicated team that includes lead server Sophie Letort from Normandy, and consulting sommelier Chris Gaither, Master Sommelier. The restaurant’s wine list was originally crafted by Chris and his wife Rebecca Fineman, MS. Several staff members have been with Rêve since it opened, creating a sense of continuity and genuine hospitality. The Magu family’s three daughters – Vivienne, Coco, and Audrey – are often seen helping out, reinforcing the family-first ethos.
