The story
In the heart of Los Angeles’ Arts District, kodō invites guests to experience contemporary Japanese cuisine with a focus on discovery. The restaurant’s mission is to offer an invitation to enjoy steakhouse-inspired dishes that rotate seasonally, working alongside a raw bar that sources fresh fish both locally and from Japan. At the sushi counter, premium handrolls are crafted with carefully chosen seasonal seafood, making this izakaya a destination for those seeking both tradition and innovation.
The menu at kodō is built around sharing, with dishes designed to be explored. Start with the Toro Carpaccio — fatty tuna with ponzu, sesame oil, and cucumber — or the Wagyu Tataki, finished with shiso, yuzu vinaigrette, and sesame mayo. The Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice layers crispy sushi rice with avocado mousse and chili oil, while the Blistered Shishito is served with ginger soy and dancing bonito. For the grill, the Wagyu Ribeye is accompanied by kodō’s compound butter and shiso chimichurri, available in 7 or 14 ounces. Other standouts include the Chimichurri Prawns with yuzu kosho butter, the Sake Poached King Salmon, and the Uni Pasta with uni cream, shiso, and nori.
The space itself reflects the creative energy of the Arts District. A greenhouse-like private dining room centers on a custom-built 16-foot monolithic table made from a single slab of live-edge pine, with six benches that seat up to 20 guests. This raw, flex space is designed to move between art and dining — hosting intimate dinners, creative workshops, and curated events. The restaurant’s recognition by the Michelin guide as a Recommended spot underscores its commitment to quality and atmosphere.
Beyond the food, kodō’s drink program is notable, with a sake list that complements the izakaya experience. Cocktails like the Kyuri Spritz — cucumber Aperol, lychee, and sparkling rosé — and the Dirty ‘Ume’ Martini — umeboshi-infused gin with plum liqueur — are crafted with care. The café runs daily from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm, while dinner service is Wednesday through Sunday, 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Whether for a full dinner or a handroll at the counter, kodō offers a refined yet welcoming take on Japanese dining in Los Angeles.
