The story
The name Yunomi comes from the Japanese word for a daily teacup—taller than it is wide, made for everyday use. That spirit carries through the restaurant: straightforward, unfussy, and focused on what matters. At its DTLA Arts District location, Yunomi Handroll serves Japanese fare built around handrolls, sashimi, and sushi, with a menu that rewards repeat visits.
The bar menu lists individual handrolls—tuna, albacore, yellowtail, salmon, scallop, shrimp tempura—each priced at $6.50, with a choice of seaweed or soy paper and a spicy or non-spicy option. Specialty handrolls go further: the Yunomi Special combines spicy albacore, shrimp tempura, crunchy onions, and truffle soy sauce; the Negi Toro uses chopped bluefin fatty tuna from Spain. Handroll sets offer a curated progression, from a three-roll set to a six-roll set.
A full sushi menu is also available on the patio, with a la carte nigiri (bluefin tuna, toro, yellowtail, salmon belly) and sushi sets that name the origin of each fish—Spain, Korea, Scotland, Japan, Canada. Starters like shishito peppers, Brussels sprouts, and rock shrimp tempura round out the meal.
Yunomi Handroll earned a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026, a nod to its consistent quality and clear focus. The restaurant operates with a 45-minute seat limit during peak hours, a practical response to demand. It’s a place that knows what it is: a counter where you eat well and move on, without pretense.
