The story

Joe's Stone Crab, Miami – A Century of Stone Crab Tradition

The Beginning

In 1913, Joe Weiss opened a small lunch counter on Miami Beach, back when Miami Beach was not yet a city. He served a top-notch fish sandwich and fries. Joe, a Hungarian-born waiter, had moved to Florida for his asthma, settling on the beach where he could breathe. His wife Jennie cooked, and together they ran the business. By 1918, they bought a bungalow on Biscayne Street, set up seven or eight tables on the front porch, and called it Joe's Restaurant. They served snapper, pompano, mackerel, and meat dishes. For eight years, as the only restaurant on the beach, they were open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The Discovery of Stone Crabs

The dish that would define Joe's came in 1921. A Harvard ichthyologist, doing research at a nearby aquarium, asked Joe if he had ever used stone crabs from the water. Joe said nobody would eat them. That day, the scientist brought a burlap sack of live stone crabs. After some debate, Joe threw them in boiling water. Chilled and cracked, served with hash brown potatoes, coleslaw, and mayonnaise, they were an instant success. The bay was full of them. Joe's Stone Crab has been serving them that way ever since.

The Heart of Joe's

Jesse Weiss, Joe and Jennie's son, was the force behind the restaurant's enduring fame. A character of Damon Runyon proportions, Jesse knew everyone – movie stars, politicians, gangsters. He greeted guests with a cigar and a story. His daughter, JoAnn, continues the family legacy. The restaurant's history is rich with tales of Jennie's firm hand and Jesse's charm, building a loyal clientele that included Al Capone, who came in as "Al Brown."

Joe's Today

Today, Joe's Stone Crab remains a Miami Beach institution, recognized by the Michelin Guide as Recommended for 2026. The menu still centers on the classic chilled stone crabs, along with a full range of seafood, free-range fried chicken, and sides like creamed spinach. The restaurant serves lunch Wednesday through Sunday and dinner nightly. Whether dining in the historic dining room, on the outdoor patio, or ordering from Joe's Take Away, the experience is rooted in over a century of tradition. Joe's Stone Crab is a genuine piece of Miami's culinary history, where the story of a simple fish sandwich became a seafood legend.
