The story
Ogawa, meaning "little river" in Japanese, occupies a space in Miami's Little River neighborhood that feels deliberately removed from the city's clamor. The design draws from the classic Minka house, with a private Japanese garden tended by a local Ikebana artisan, traditional calligraphy scrolls, and contemporary nihonga artworks. Diners sit at the sushi bar where Master Chef Masa and Chef Royce work, watching each course take shape. The beverage program, helmed by Sommelier Luis Martinez, offers a carefully curated selection of grower champagnes, premium sake, and classic wines.
Master Chef Masayuki Komatsu, born in Osaka, trained at Sushiden in New York City and later in Monaco, before being handpicked by Chef Morimoto as Head Chef in Miami. With nearly two decades dedicated to Edomae sushi, his philosophy revolves around showcasing ingredients at the peak of their seasonality, sourced from an extensive network of relationships in Japan. Owner Álvaro Perez Miranda, a trailblazer in Japanese cuisine and art, holds the distinction of being the first Latino appointed Goodwill Ambassador for Japanese Cuisine in the U.S. His other concepts include the refined Edomae-style dining at Hiyakawa and the fast-casual Wabi Sabi and Midorie.
The Kappo menu begins with a series of small dishes focused on seasonal ingredients at peak freshness. It then moves into 8 to 10 pieces of seasonal nigiri, ending with a handroll, miso soup, and dessert. Ogawa earned its Michelin star for this precise, ingredient-driven approach. The restaurant's commitment to Edomae tradition and the serene, art-filled setting make it a destination for those seeking authentic Japanese cuisine in Miami.
For larger groups up to 12, Ogawa offers private dining and full buyouts, as well as catering and bespoke experiences at your residence. The restaurant accommodates dietary restrictions with 72 hours notice, though some restrictions like no rice, no fish, or vegetarian cannot be accommodated. Corkage is $75 per 750ml bottle.
