The story
Jack and Rose Arnold opened Arnold's Country Kitchen in Nashville in 1982. More than four decades later, their children are still cooking and serving the city’s downtown workers, country-music folk, and visitors alike. It remains a true mom-and-pop operation: on any given day, you will find at least three Arnolds behind the steam table.
The restaurant’s reputation goes far beyond its concrete-block walls. In 2009, the James Beard Foundation awarded Arnold's its American Classics Award, celebrating the restaurant as a regional treasure. More recently, the Michelin guide awarded it a Recommended rating, affirming that this cafeteria-style spot belongs on any serious Nashville itinerary.
Arnold's is a classic meat-and-three, where you choose a protein and three sides from a daily-changing lineup. The James Beard Foundation itself noted that while Jack Arnold roasts a beautiful haunch of beef, vegetables are the real specialty: long-simmered greens, perfectly crisp fried green tomatoes, and cooked-to-order cornbread have won a loyal following. Everything is made fresh from scratch, fried in beef tallow. The kitchen also accommodates gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegetarian diets – a thoughtful touch at a place so rooted in tradition.
Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 10:30 to 2:45. Saturdays shift to brunch hours, 11 to 3. Expect a line, but it moves quickly. The dining room is no-frills, the hospitality genuine. Arnold's Country Kitchen is Nashville shorthand for honest, soulful Southern cooking, recognized by the country’s most trusted culinary authorities.
