The story
On 620 Taylor Street in Nashville, Tailor operates with a simple promise: to make you feel like family. This is a dining room built on warmth, love, and a menu drawn from Chef Vivek Surti’s South Asian American heritage. A James Beard Foundation Semifinalist for Outstanding Hospitality in 2026, Tailor has also earned a coveted spot on Bon Appétit’s Hot 10 list of America’s Best New Restaurants and a Michelin Recommended distinction, reflecting its steady, high-touch service.
The experience is modeled after an intimate dinner party. Guests enter through the Living Room, a bar area that opens at 4:30 PM, where they can enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine before being seated. The dining room menu is set—a tasting format designed to let the storytelling unfold. As dishes arrive, the team explains what’s on the plate and often shares a personal anecdote about the ingredients or how they were prepared. This sense of personal narrative is central to Chef Surti’s approach; he refers to the restaurant as “our home.”
The cuisine is Indian, but more specifically, it reflects the vision of a first-generation American. Seasonal menus (the current one is Spring 2026) evolve throughout the year. The kitchen accommodates a range of dietary needs, including vegetarian and vegan diets. Dinner in the Dining Room is $130 per person, while seats at the Chef’s Bar are $150. Beverage pairings, both alcoholic and spirit-free, are available for those who want a guided experience.
Tailor has been called a pioneer in the First Generation American food movement. That recognition—from Bon Appétit, Thrillist, and the Michelin guide—isn’t the point of the place. It’s a byproduct of a restaurant that feels less like a performance and more like a generous evening spent at a friend’s table.
