The story
Gabrielle Restaurant has been a fixture of New Orleans dining since 1992. Originally located on Esplanade Avenue, this family-run establishment took a twelve-year hiatus after Hurricane Katrina before reopening its doors on Orleans Avenue in September 2017. Co-owned by chefs Mary and Greg Sonnier, the restaurant is a testament to resilience and a deep commitment to the city’s culinary traditions.
Award-winning Chef Greg Sonnier presents his take on Cajun food with New Orleans flair, a style that reflects the restaurant's Creole and Southern American roots. The menu changes frequently to showcase the freshest local ingredients, but signature dishes have earned devoted followings. The Slow Roasted Duck—served with mixed mushrooms, roasted red peppers, and an orange-sherry sauce over duckin’ dirty rice—is a standout. The New Orleans style Barbeque Shrimp Pie, a handmade pie shell filled with smashed sweet potato and topped with local BBQ shrimp, is another must-try. Other options include Oysters Gabie baked with artichokes and pancetta, a Duck Liver Mousse Pâté, and a gluten-free gumbo called The Faux Pax. The restaurant’s dedication to quality has earned it a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, a fitting nod to its carefully curated beverage program.
The dining room is intentionally small, creating an intimate and welcoming setting for dinner service from Wednesday through Saturday. The restaurant recommends reservations, which can be made up to 30 days in advance. The dress code is smart casual—jackets are not required. For a more casual experience, the restaurant also offers a Fish Fry-Day takeout special during Lent, featuring fried fish, coleslaw, and potato salad. Whether you’re a longtime local or a visitor, Gabrielle offers a genuine taste of New Orleans hospitality.
