The story
Pierozek, which opened in 2019 in Greenpoint’s historic Polish neighborhood, is the only Polish restaurant in America to earn a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The award, given for good quality cooking at a reasonable price, reflects the kitchen’s commitment to honest, handmade food.
The menu is built around pierogi—dumplings filled with potato and cheese, sauerkraut and mushroom, pork shoulder, spinach, or more inventive combinations like jalapeño with bacon or Murray’s Irish Cheddar. Each day, a team of women from Poland rolls and fills the dough using recipes passed down from their families. The New York Times has described the process: “It starts with butter, more than you think is necessary…” and noted that the restaurant’s success comes from “its synchronization of past and present.”
Beyond pierogi, the kitchen prepares traditional Polish dishes: red borscht (served plain or with croquettes or mini pierogi), meat or sauerkraut croquettes, gołąbki (stuffed cabbage), and kielbasa. A weekend-only grill bowl combines pan-fried pierogi with grilled kielbasa and vegetables. Sweet pierogi—filled with blueberry, strawberry, or sweet cheese—are served with warm buttered breadcrumbs.
The dining room blends modern comfort with Polish folk art. Exposed brick and white marble are paired with ceramics and artwork from the 1960s and 70s. There is indoor and outdoor seating, and a happy hour runs weekday afternoons.
CBS New York reported that roughly 2,000 pierogi are made by hand each day. The restaurant also offers catering and private events, and a pierogi-shaped baby teether is available for sale—a lighthearted nod to the restaurant’s name, which means “little pierogi.”
