The story
In the heart of Long Island City, R40 is an innovative Argentinian restaurant that brings the spirit of the parrilla to Queens. The open kitchen is built around a custom wood-burning grill, where the team prepares locally sourced food with intention. The result is a menu that feels both rooted in tradition and distinctly of its moment.
The space itself reflects this balance. Inside, the open kitchen and bar anchor the room. Outside, a seasonal backyard oasis offers a welcome escape. At R40, hospitality is expressed through community, culture, and creativity — a philosophy that has earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction.
The menu is built for sharing and savoring. Start with the steak tartare, made with grass-fed coulotte and finished with pickled mustard seeds and sherry. The empanadas come in three variations, including a classic ground beef version with golden raisins and boiled egg. For a larger meal, the parrillada for two is a full Argentinian experience: skirt steak, short ribs, chorizo, morcilla, sweetbread, and mustard-marinated chicken, served with chimichurri and salsa criolla. Other large plates include a 10-ounce prime black Angus skirt steak and a 16-ounce 30-day dry-aged NY strip.
The drinks program is equally thoughtful, with a wine list focused on Argentina — Malbec, Torrontés, and Cabernet Franc from Mendoza and Patagonia — alongside creative cocktails like the Vernon Blvd, made with bourbon, amaro nonino, fernet, and yerba mate.
R40 is open for dinner and weekend brunch, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Whether you're stopping by for a choripan and a glass of wine at the bar or settling in for the full parrillada, this is a restaurant that knows exactly what it is — and does it well.
