The story
In the heart of Midtown East, Veerays presents itself as New York City's first Indian speakeasy restaurant. The space, designed by Paris and New York-based OulipO studio, evokes the 1920s with a blend of brass, cognac leather, smoky glass, and theater red velvet. It is a deliberate escape, a place where the clink of glasses and the aroma of exotic spices fill the air.
The kitchen is led by Chef Hemant Mathur, the first Indian chef in the United States to earn a Michelin star, a recognition he has retained across multiple New York City restaurants. His menu at Veerays celebrates Indian cuisine through regional classics, exotic grills, and modern interpretations. For the adventurous, the Exotic Meat Tasting features ostrich, kangaroo, camel, yak, and alligator, while the six-course Chef's Tasting Menu offers a journey through Mathur's signature curries and grills.
The cocktail program matches the setting's clandestine charm. Drinks are named after Prohibition-era figures, like the ‘Diamond’ Joe with jamun dry gin and Moët champagne, or the ‘Bugsy’ Siegel, a take on a classic Negroni. Desserts continue the playful narrative with items like a "Masquerade Ball" (gulab jamun in rabri) and a "Killer Cake" of layered chocolate.
Recognized by the MICHELIN Guide in 2025, Veerays is a collaboration between Chef Mathur and restaurateur Sonny Solomon. It is a place where the formality of fine Indian dining meets the relaxed thrill of a hidden bar, offering a distinctive experience in New York City.
