The story
Black Rooster Taqueria is the work of husband-and-wife team John and Juliana Calloway, who brought their “Farm to Taco” dream to life on Mills Avenue. Chef John’s modern take on Mexican cuisine is a culinary celebration of the country’s culture and history, using the highest quality ingredients he can get his hands on. The restaurant’s vibrancy is felt in both the menu and the décor—a colorful, authentic Day of the Dead themed atmosphere highlighted by local art, pre-loved refurbished furniture, and handmade tables by Chef John. Even the Calloways’ children play a role: Ryder, the eight-year-old “Chief Tasting Officer,” and Lily June, the two-year-old “Guacamole Connoisseur,” helped select the art and develop some recipes. That personal touch, combined with a commitment to real ingredients, earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026.
The menu at Black Rooster Taqueria is a twist on Latin flavor, and nothing like the typical burrito-sour-cream routine. Starters include a made-to-order guacamole, ahi tuna ceviche with mango and coconut milk, and a tamale with organic corn masa and roasted pork. Tacos are the heart of the operation: achiote pork slow-roasted in banana leaf, chicken tinga with chipotle, carne asada with house marinade, and a vegetarian option of shiitake mushrooms and zucchini. Smoked beef brisket, crispy fish, and pork belly tacos round out the offerings. Bowls of pozole verde and pozole rojo (with roasted beef tri-tip) provide heartier options. Sides like Colombian pinto beans with roasted pork, sweet plantains, and cilantro poblano rice complete the meal. Desserts include tres leches cake and a chocolate chipotle flan with peanut butter and berry sauce.
The atmosphere is as deliberate as the food. With Juliana at the creative helm, the restaurant blends elements of the Calloways’ life and travels—evoking memories of Mexico and South America. The space is designed for people with a passion for art, sustainability, and real ingredients. Counter dining, outdoor seating, and a bar make it a flexible spot for lunch or dinner. Whether you’re grabbing a taco to go or settling in for a pozole, Black Rooster Taqueria delivers authentic Mexican food in an environment that feels personal and genuine.
