The story
Scratch Gourmet Kitchen began in May 2020 as a catering company founded by Tyler and Monica Morrison, both seasoned hospitality professionals. The couple, who had spent years traveling the country for work and eating adventurously, moved to Kansas City in 2019 to start a family. What started as a premium catering business gradually transformed into a casual fine dining restaurant and wine bar in Prairie Village. Today, it stands as a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence winner (2024), recognized for its thoughtful approach to both food and wine.
The kitchen is led by Executive Chef Mitchell Fetterling, who joined in October 2025 with over 14 years of culinary leadership. His résumé includes stints at two-Michelin-starred Saison, Bluestem, and Copenhagen’s Restaurant 108 under chef Kristian Baumann. Grant Ramirez, Director of Culinary, brings 24 years of experience, having previously served as Executive Chef at Mission Hills Country Club and now overseeing all culinary operations for Scratch. Beverage Manager Kaylee Addison, trained at The Monarch Bar and The Mercury Room, crafts the cocktail program, while owners Tyler and Monica remain deeply involved in curating the wine list.
The menu is built around scratch-made American cuisine with Italian influences. Every stock simmers for hours, sauces are built from the ground up, and ingredients are sourced with intention. The restaurant describes its food as “upscale dining that feels familiar, not intimidating,” where sophisticated techniques meet the flavors you already love. The cocktail program mirrors that ethos: syrups are made in-house, and every drink is approached with care. Whether for a happy hour classic or a date-night experiment, the bar delivers.
The Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, earned two years running, reflects the owners’ commitment to making fine wine approachable. The list features bottles from around the world, available at retail pricing for both on-site consumption and grab-and-go. From a $12 Sauvignon Blanc to a $350 Napa Cab, the selection aims to introduce novices to fine wine while satisfying seasoned palates. A Wine & Supper Club hosts themed dinners, and a Wine Quiz helps guests find their perfect glass. The elegant patio, open Tuesday through Saturday, is a favorite spot for enjoying these selections alongside the scratch-made American fare.
