The story
Forsythia is a contemporary French restaurant from Chef-Proprietor Christopher Kearse, located in Philadelphia’s Olde City neighborhood. The name is a personal one: Kearse grew up on Forsythia Drive in Levittown, just outside the city, where he first discovered his passion for cooking by watching hours of cooking shows and eventually preparing nightly dinners for his parents and seven siblings. The restaurant’s bright, modern interior pays homage to that childhood—yellow and white accents, Forsythia flowers, and greenery scattered throughout the space.
The dining room centers on an open kitchen, where Kearse and his team prepare inventive French bistro-inspired fare. The menu changes often, built around top-tier seasonal ingredients served in small plates and entrées. In November 2025, Forsythia was recognized by the Michelin Guide as a Recommended Restaurant in Philadelphia, a nod to its consistent execution and thoughtful cooking. The bar program is equally intentional, with an extensive selection of hard-to-find global wines, craft cocktails, local beers, and an espresso bar.
Kearse’s path to Forsythia began at Philadelphia’s Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College, where he graduated as valedictorian in 2005. He then moved to Chicago, writing weekly letters to ten top chefs until he landed positions in some of the country’s most influential kitchens. In 2012, at age 27, he opened Will BYOB on East Passyunk Avenue, earning “Best New Chef” from Philadelphia magazine and a James Beard Award semifinalist nod in both 2013 and 2014. At Forsythia, he brings that same drive to a refined yet welcoming setting, serving modern French cuisine with a contemporary twist.
