The story
Chef-owner Gregory Vernick’s energetic neighborhood bistro in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square is a celebration of contemporary American cooking with impactful global flavors. Housed in a bi-level brownstone, Vernick Food & Drink offers three distinct dining spaces: a vibrant bar and lounge, a cozy open-kitchen dining room with a chef’s counter, and a lively second-floor room overlooking Walnut Street. The restaurant’s commitment to pristine ingredients and seasonality drives an extensive, diverse menu that has earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction.
Greg Vernick, a New Jersey native, was drawn to the kitchen early—his mother owned a restaurant near their Cherry Hill home and his grandfather a butcher shop in Philadelphia. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Administration from Boston University and an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts from the Culinary Institute of America, he worked with Jean-Georges Vongerichten in New York, including at Nougatine and Spice Market. Vernick returned to Philadelphia in 2012 to open his debut restaurant, which quickly garnered acclaim, including the James Beard Foundation’s Best Chef Mid-Atlantic award. His contemporary American cuisine reflects a deep respect for ingredients and a global perspective.
The restaurant’s atmosphere is as thoughtful as its food. The bar and lounge buzz with energy, while the chef’s counter invites guests to watch the kitchen in action. Upstairs, the dining room feels intimate yet lively, with views of the tree-lined street. Whether for a casual dinner or a special occasion, Vernick Food & Drink delivers a consistently refined yet welcoming experience.
