The story
In the heart of downtown Raleigh, St. Roch Fine Oysters + Bar offers a distinct take on New Orleans cooking. Chef and owner Sunny Gerhart, a two-time James Beard Award nominee for Best Chef: Southeast (2022 & 2025), describes the menu as “a little nod to New Orleans, but it’s not any sort of traditional New Orleans menu.” Instead, Creole spices and flavors enliven the bounty of Southern farmers and North Carolina’s oyster beds and fisheries.
Gerhart grew up on St. Roch Avenue in New Orleans, and the city’s vibrant West African, Caribbean, and Vietnamese communities—along with Spanish, Italian, and French traditions—inspire his cooking. After culinary school, he worked under James Beard Award-winning chef Ashley Christensen, helping open Poole’s Diner in 2007. In 2017, he transformed a previous concept into St. Roch, named for the patron saint of his old neighborhood. The restaurant has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, further cementing its place in Raleigh’s dining scene.
The atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming. The food is described as “familiar dishes bringing surprising flavors”—a reflection of Gerhart’s instinctive, experience-driven approach. Daily specials include half-off oysters from 5pm to 6pm, with a focus on West Coast varieties on Wednesdays. The wine list, curated by Gerhart (whose passion for the subject began with Wine for Dummies), offers thoughtful pairings by the glass and bottle.
St. Roch is a place where homage and invention meet. For those seeking seafood and Cajun-inspired cuisine in Raleigh, it delivers something genuinely personal.
