The story
Barcelona Wine Bar began in 1995, when Sasa Mahr-Batuz and Andy Pforzheimer opened a 38-seat wine bar inspired by years of living in Spain and Portugal. They wanted to recreate the feel of an evening in Barcelona—sophisticated décor that evoked Milan, SoHo, or Rio de Janeiro, and simple, flavor-filled dishes redolent with olive oil, lemon, and smoky paprika. That original vision still guides the Reston location today.
The cuisine is clean and rustic, with tapas shaped by Mediterranean, Spanish, and South American influences. Think simple, honest ingredients prepared without compromise. The atmosphere is refined yet welcoming, a place where the décor and the plates feel equally intentional.
Nearly 400 wines fill the list, with an emphasis on lesser-known regions of Spain and Portugal. The team behind the bar includes seasoned wine educators—Gretchen Thomas, who holds multiple certifications and is a certified Spanish Wine Educator, and Emily Nevin-Giannini, a Certified Sherry Wine Specialist who travels to small producers across Spain. Their knowledge powers everything from by-the-glass selections to themed wine classes, like the “Iconic Red Wines of Spain” series that explores Bierzo, Ribera del Duero, Priorat, and Rioja.
This dedication to sourcing and education earned Barcelona Wine Bar a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence in 2017, a recognition of the list’s breadth, quality, and thoughtful curation.
Barcelona’s appreciation for wine extends to farming philosophy. The restaurant champions biodynamic winemaking, celebrating producers who work with the land in ecologically protective ways—following lunar cycles, using mules instead of tractors, and growing grapes that express their place. It’s a commitment that shows up in every glass, from small-batch discoveries to iconic names like Cristal and Gramona Cava.
