The story
Since opening its doors in 2004, Zócalo has become a fixture of Sacramento’s dining scene—a modern Mexican restaurant where vibrant decor meets bold, fresh flavors and masterful technique. The team’s philosophy, “True Mexican Hospitality,” is evident in every detail: from the warm welcome at the door to the carefully layered salsas and handmade tortillas on the plate. This commitment to genuine hospitality and quality recently earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommendation.
The menu draws from traditional Mexican cuisine with a contemporary spin. Start with the Guacamole, prepared tableside with avocado, tomato, jalapeño, cilantro, and queso cotija, or the Esquites—braised corn tossed with chili lime salt, lime pickled onion, and chipotle aioli. Tacos are a highlight, especially the Baja Fish—Sacramento’s favorite, according to the restaurant—with beer-battered fish, fresh cabbage, and chipotle aioli. The Carnitas tacos feature slow-roasted pork confit with tomatillo pico de gallo and morita salsa.
For something more substantial, the Enchiladas En Mole are a standout. The mole recipe was taught to the Zócalo team at the Convento de Santa Clara in Puebla, Mexico—the birthplace of mole poblano. It’s served with chicken braised in pasilla chile, queso cotija, sesame seeds, and plantains. The Pozole Bowl, a Mexican classic of pork simmered in red chile broth with hominy, offers another comforting option.
The atmosphere supports the food. Zócalo describes its space as designed for celebration, gathering, and family. Weekend brunch begins at 10 am with no reservations necessary, encouraging a relaxed, come-as-you-are vibe. Private dining rooms and outdoor seating are available for larger gatherings.
At its heart, Zócalo is built on culture and community. Its local outreach program, Zócalo Cares, donates meals to school and hospital staff and partners with organizations across the greater Sacramento area. As the team puts it, “Our Mexican hospitality doesn’t stop at the door.” That ethos, combined with a kitchen that takes its craft seriously, makes this a rewarding stop for anyone seeking modern Mexican cuisine in Sacramento.
