The story
Herb & Wood, in San Diego’s Little Italy, describes itself as a modern interpretation of traditional Mediterranean cuisine. The kitchen focuses on rustic, wood-fired dishes that elevate humble ingredients. A California ethos of seasonality and sustainability runs through every plate, bringing freshness to Mediterranean flavors. This approach has earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction.
The restaurant is the work of celebrated chef Brian Malarkey, one of the country’s most successful restaurateurs. Through his Puffer Malarkey Collective, he has developed over fifteen restaurant concepts across Southern California. At Herb & Wood, he brings his experience to bear on a menu that feels both timeless and approachable. The space itself accommodates everything from intimate dinners to events for up to 600 guests.
Dinner begins with appetizers like Gem Lettuce with mojo verde, Hamachi with schoug and amba, or Roasted Oysters & Bone Marrow with charred lemon and horseradish butter. Vegetable sides include Fire Roasted Corn with feta and fresno chili aioli, and Japanese Sweet Potatoes with nduja-spiced yogurt. Entrees range from Half Chicken with biryani spice and green tahini to a 32oz Bone-In Cowboy Ribeye with hollandaise butter. Wood-fired pizzas, such as the Fig & Prosciutto with humboldt fog and brie cream, and freshly made pastas—including Mafalde with whole main lobster—round out the offerings. The cuisine is best described as Californian, with strong Mediterranean roots.
The restaurant prides itself on a relaxed dining and social experience. Happy Hour runs Monday through Friday from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. The team is known for exceptional service, whether for a wedding, corporate event, or dinner party. Outdoor seating, a private room, and wheelchair access are available.
