The story
Del Popolo began as a wood-fired pizza truck in 2012, earning a devoted following before settling into its brick-and-mortar home on Bush Street in 2015. The restaurant has since become a San Francisco institution, recognized with a Michelin Bib Gourmand for its good quality, good value cooking.
The menu centers on Neapolitan-style pizzas with a soft, blistered crust. Classics like the Margherita with crushed tomato, mozzarella, and basil sit alongside inventive options such as the Nduja with Calabrian sausage and scamorza, or the Potato pizza with Yukon gold, red onion, fontina, and rosemary. A gluten-free crust and vegan mozzarella are available.
Equally compelling are the seasonal, market-driven appetizers. The "Not Pizza" section features dishes like Little Gem Caesar with anchovy and focaccia pangrattato, burrata with strawberries and fermented kumquats, and local Dungeness crab with brown butter and Calabrian chili. The wine list emphasizes handcrafted, low-intervention bottles, all organically, biodynamically, or sustainably produced.
The Bush Street location offers counter dining, outdoor seating, and a private room for gatherings. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on the patio. Reservations are recommended but not required.
This is Californian pizza at its finest—rooted in tradition, driven by quality ingredients, and served without pretense.
