The story
Welcome to Hamano Sushi, a Castro Street mainstay where Chef-Owner Jiro Lin brings the precision of Tokyo training to San Francisco. After 15 years of study in Japan, Chef Lin arrived at Hamano Sushi and eventually took the helm, focusing on simplicity through quality ingredients and focused technique. His approach celebrates the timeless, detailed beauty of Japanese cuisine — a philosophy that earned Hamano Sushi a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026.
Chef Lin’s dedication is matched by his team, whose average tenure of six years creates a familial atmosphere in both the kitchen and the dining room. The result is a consistent, warm hospitality that complements the food.
The heart of Hamano Sushi lies in its omakase menus, which change fluidly with seasonal and daily availability. The Standard Omakase ($120) presents ten pieces of seasonal nigiri, expertly prepared to showcase the day’s freshest flavors. The Premium Omakase ($175) expands the journey: two small bite appetizers, ten pieces of seasonal nigiri, a closing bowl of Hamano Udon, and a thoughtfully prepared dessert. Both options exclude beverages, service charge, and tax.
The dinner menu offers a wide range of a la carte options, from nigiri and sashimi to inventive rolls like the Castro (crispy fried salmon and white tuna with a spicy-sweet sauce) and the Mission (yellowtail and jalapeño topped with white tuna). Appetizers such as miso-marinated black cod (Gindara) and homemade gyoza with heritage pork share the table with heartier dishes like beef udon or a prime ribeye steak dinner set. A carefully curated sake list, selected in partnership with The Wine Club, rounds out the experience.
Whether seated at the counter for omakase or enjoying a casual dinner of rolls and udon, Hamano Sushi delivers a genuine taste of Japanese culinary craft in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood.
