The story

Nari San Francisco | Contemporary Thai Restaurant with Michelin Star

A Contemporary Thai Love Letter

At 1625 Post Street in San Francisco’s Japantown, Nari brings a singular vision to the city’s dining scene. Chef and owner Pim Techamuanvivit, already celebrated for her work at Kin Khao, conceived Nari as a deeply personal project. The name itself — “Nari” (นารี) — derives from the Sanskrit-rooted Thai word for “women,” and the restaurant is her tribute to the generations of Thai women who built the foundations of the country’s cuisine. It is, in her words, a “love letter to the women in her life who taught her to cook and, more importantly, to eat.”

California Sensibility, Thai Soul

The kitchen, led by Chef de Cuisine Meghan Clark, translates that heritage into food described as “contemporary Thai” with a “modern Californian sensibility.” This is not a strict traditionalist approach, but one that honors Thai techniques and flavors while drawing on the produce and mindset of the West Coast. The menu shifts with the seasons, reflecting both the bounty of California and the rhythms of Thai cooking.

The dining room complements the food: airy and refined, with options for outdoor seating, a private room, and a valet service that hints at the evening’s occasion. Wine Director Sam Zelver and Beverage Director Jackson Miller curate an interesting wine list and broader drinks program that matches the kitchen’s ambition.

Recognition and Rhythm

Nari’s cooking earned a Michelin star for its high quality, a natural extension of Chef Techamuanvivit’s reputation. The press has been equally emphatic: the New York Times called it a revitalization of fine dining, and the San Francisco Chronicle declared it “bold and fearless.” The restaurant serves dinner nightly, with Sunday through Thursday hours from 5:30 to 9 p.m., extending to 9:30 on Fridays and Saturdays.

In every detail — from the name to the chef’s biography to the plate — Nari feels like a deliberate, affectionate conversation between two culinary worlds.
