The story
Routier, on the corner of California and Divisadero in San Francisco's Presidio Heights, calls itself a "frenchish" restaurant. It is the kind of place that feels both familiar and considered, where the service is prompt and informal and the food celebrates the French love of good ingredients and good wine. The name itself comes from a tradition: a regional restaurant serving simple, delicious food.
The restaurant is co-owned by Chef John Paul Carmona, Pastry Chef Belinda Leong, and Michel Suas. Carmona and Leong met years ago while working in one of the Bay Area's fine dining kitchens; Leong and Suas are also the team behind the beloved B Patisserie. That pedigree shows in the cooking, which is rooted in technique but never fussy.
The menu changes regularly, with a sample from February 2026 giving a sense of the approach: seasonal, market-driven, and unfussy. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with walk-ins welcome and a private room available for larger parties. Routier has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, a nod to its consistent quality and genuine hospitality.
Open Wednesday through Sunday from 5:30 until close, with last reservations at 8:45, Routier is a spot for a relaxed evening out. The kitchen also offers takeout, and the team adds a 6% health fee to online orders. For parties of five or more, a 20% gratuity is included. The cooking is Californian in its ingredients and French in its soul, and the wine list reflects that same sensibility.
Whether you are stopping in for a glass of wine and a plate of something simple, or booking the private room for a celebration, Routier delivers the kind of meal that makes you want to come back.
