The story
Sons & Daughters, on 18th Street in San Francisco's Mission district, offers a tasting menu that draws inspiration from New Nordic cuisine while remaining grounded in classical technique. The kitchen's core values—sustainability and seasonality—are expressed through a menu that celebrates the abundance of Northern California produce. The dining room wraps around a lively open kitchen, making the cooking an integral part of the evening.
The restaurant holds two Michelin stars, a recognition that speaks to the precision and care woven into every course. The tasting menu is priced at $315, and guests can opt for a wine pairing ($185), a reserve pairing ($385), or an alcohol-free beverage pairing ($145). The wine list, curated by Beverage Director David Kolvek and Assistant Sommelier Frida Blomdahl Hay, spans classic and New World selections chosen for their terroir and ability to complement the evolving menu.
Executive Chef and co-owner Harrison Cheney grew up in London and credits his mother, a ceramicist, for nurturing his creative eye. His career took him from London to San Francisco and eventually Stockholm, where he worked at Gastrologik before returning to the Bay Area. The team includes General Manager and Sommelier Frida Blomdahl Hay, whose upbringing in northern Sweden gave her a deep connection to nature and a passion for wine; she completed her sommelier studies in 2015 and brings vineyard experience to her pairings. Executive Sous Chef Alexander Blomdahl Hay also worked with Cheney at Gastrologik, and the kitchen is supported by a dedicated crew of chefs de partie.
Sons & Daughters accepts reservations for up to four guests in the main dining room and up to six in a private dining room. For larger groups, the entire restaurant can be reserved for exclusive events of seven to sixteen guests. The atmosphere is welcoming, with a dress code that leans toward casual elegance—jackets are not required, and jeans are welcome. Air conditioning keeps the space comfortable year-round.
The menu changes with the seasons, and the kitchen asks for at least 48 hours' notice for dietary restrictions. Due to the complexity of the tasting menu, certain restrictions (vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, salt-free, and no-allium) cannot be accommodated. The experience is designed to unfold over two and a half to four hours, beginning promptly at the reservation time.
Sons & Daughters is a place where the philosophy of New Nordic cuisine meets the generosity of California's farms and waters, executed with the discipline that has earned it two Michelin stars.
