The story
Since 2008, Z & Y Restaurant has established itself as a destination for authentic Szechuan cuisine in the heart of San Francisco’s historic Chinatown. The restaurant’s consistent quality has been recognized by the Michelin guide with a Bib Gourmand award, a distinction it has held since 2012. This honor is a testament to the kitchen’s ability to deliver compelling, good-value cooking year after year.
The driving force behind Z & Y is owner and executive chef Lijun Han. With a background that includes serving as the former executive chef at the Chinese Consulate-General in San Francisco and cooking for two Chinese presidents, Chef Han brings a level of experience and technique that sets his Szechuan cooking apart. His skillful approach to the cuisine has also earned praise from publications like Forbes, the San Francisco Chronicle, and Eater.
Located at 655 Jackson Street, the restaurant is a short walk from the Financial District and Portsmouth Square. The space itself is welcoming, designed to host everything from family dinners to corporate events. The atmosphere is warm, letting the food—the region’s signature heat, complex spice blends, and bold flavors—take center stage. The menu is a deep exploration of Szechuan classics, with dishes that showcase Chef Han’s refined technique.
Z & Y’s commitment to its craft has made it a lasting fixture in the city’s dining scene, a place where the food speaks directly to the traditions of Szechuan cooking.
