The story
Pausa lives up to its name. Chef-Owner Andrea Giuliani, a Veneto native with over thirty years in kitchens across Italy and the Bay Area, invites guests to step away from the daily rush. The restaurant’s fresh, authentic, and contemporary Italian fare draws on the bounty of Northern California, made from scratch each day. The result is approachable Italian cuisine that earned Pausa a Michelin Bib Gourmand—a mark of good quality, good value cooking that feels both generous and refined.
Giuliani’s path to Pausa began in 2005, when he arrived in the United States as executive chef at Spiedo in San Mateo. There he met Steven Ugur, his future business partner. After leading kitchens at Piatti in Santa Clara and Piazza D’Angelo in Marin, Giuliani reunited with Ugur to transform the old Spiedo space into something fresh. At Pausa, his cooking stays true to his Italian roots while celebrating California’s seasonal ingredients. An all-Italian wine list, curated with the same care, complements every dish.
Whether you gather for Spritz Hour in the lively bar or the outdoor parklet, settle in for a date night in the ambient dining room, or book the Chef’s Table for a five-course tasting menu with wine pairing, Pausa offers varied ways to enjoy the evening. The restaurant also accommodates groups up to 130, with options ranging from cocktail receptions to plated dinners in the Bolle Room or semi-private spaces. The team ensures your next pause is a memorable one.
