The story
At 1213 State Street in Santa Barbara, Bibi Ji brings together the bounty of the Central Coast and the deep traditions of Indian cooking. Owner Alejandro Medina and James Beard award-winning sommelier Rajat Parr have created a dining room where local seafood arrives sea-to-table and is transformed with the bright, layered flavors of Indian curries. The Michelin Guide calls it “a trendy Indian dining room that makes quite a splash,” and in 2026 it earned a Michelin Recommended distinction.
The menu is built for sharing. Dishes harness the best of the season—think uni biryani, a crunchy, creamy fried rice served in a sea urchin shell, which caught the attention of the New York Times. Every plate is paired with an extensive list of rare natural wines, curated by Parr himself. The wine club offers bottles that the team would open at the bar, and the Thursday locals night features $10 wines by the glass. Monday is thali night at $39, and industry professionals receive 15% off the menu and wine list.
Bibi Ji is a space that feels both edgy and welcoming. The bar is the heart of the room, where happy hour runs from 9 to 10 p.m. and the team greets regulars with a two-step handshake. The wine list is a draw on its own, but the food—bright, spicy, and rooted in Indian technique—keeps guests coming back. USA Today named it the #1 best new restaurant in Santa Barbara, praising “some of the brightest flavors in the city.”
Dinner is served from 5 to 10 p.m., Thursday through Monday. The restaurant is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Reservations are recommended and can be made through OpenTable. Bibi Ji also offers delivery and pickup, and the wine club is open to anyone who wants to uncork perks.
