The story
On the grounds of the storied San Ysidro Ranch, the Stonehouse Restaurant occupies a 19th-century citrus packing house that has been transformed into an unforgettable dining destination. Recently named the #1 Restaurant in Santa Barbara by OpenTable, it also holds a Michelin recommendation, placing it among California's most distinguished tables.
The setting itself is a study in rustic romance. Diners choose between a wood-burning fireplace indoors, an ocean-view terrace draped in twinkling lights, or one of the magical private dining areas. The atmosphere is warm and unhurried, with a live Spanish guitarist adding to the evening's rhythm.
Executive Chef Matt Johnson, a Santa Barbara native, has been leading the kitchen since 2008. He draws directly from the Ranch's organic gardens and citrus groves, where Meyer lemons and seasonal produce find their way into his imaginative regional cuisine. The menu changes with the seasons, but signatures include the flambéed tableside Steak Diane and the famous SYR Meyer Lemon Tart. For lunch, the Korean Beef Tacos—a favorite of owner Ty Warner—are a standout.
The wine program is nothing short of extraordinary. Since 2014, the Stonehouse has held the Wine Spectator Grand Award, an honor given to fewer than 100 restaurants worldwide. The cellar holds 15,500 bottles and 3,500 labels, with a crown-jewel vertical of Château Pétrus dating back to 1945. Wine Director David Fainberg curates the list, and private tastings can be arranged in the newest venue, The Secret Cellar.
Beyond the main dining room, the property offers the Speakeasy for craft cocktails and live music, and the Veranda for al fresco dining under the stars. Sunday Champagne Brunch is a festive affair with generous, luxe dishes.
From the organic gardens to the Pacific views, the Stonehouse delivers contemporary American cuisine with a sense of place that is both grounded and refined.
