Since opening in December 2006, Rustic Canyon has been the flagship of the Rustic Canyon Family restaurant group. Founder Josh Loeb’s vision began with intimate monthly dinners at his home in the Rustic Canyon neighborhood, where friends gathered around a long candlelit table to share thoughtful food and discover interesting wines. That same spirit carries through today: a welcoming dining destination that takes a slow-food approach and celebrates the world-class ingredients found weekly at the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market. The restaurant’s motto, “Simple Ain’t Easy,” reflects a belief that extra steps—often unnoticed and time-consuming—make something truly special.

The Team Behind the Kitchen and Bar

Executive Chef Elijah De Leon leads the kitchen, bringing experience from his time working with Chef Jeremy Fox at Birdie G’s. His favorite part of the job is the energy during a busy service and the daily work with incredible people and beautiful ingredients. His own favorite dish on the menu is the Honeycomb Ice Cream—a longtime, perfect ending to meals at Rustic Canyon. Alongside him, the kitchen team includes Sous Chef Giancarlo Serrano and a dedicated crew of chefs de partie.

The bar program is equally considered. Bar Manager Justin Dicken crafts an astonishing array of bitters, tinctures, and liqueurs, often incorporating kitchen scraps and farmers’ market finds. Seasonal cocktails can be as fleeting as the food, showcasing peak-season produce like snap peas, canary melons, or cherimoya. The wine list, curated by Sommelier Lorenzo I. Reef, features more than 300 selections focused on small producers committed to soil health and chemical-free practices. It has earned placement on Wine Enthusiast’s “Best Wine Restaurants” list for five consecutive years—a reflection of the deep commitment to craft that has also earned Rustic Canyon a Michelin Recommended recognition.

What to Expect on the Plate

The menu changes hyper-seasonally, drawing from a network of trusted local farms: Weiser Family Farms, Tutti Frutti Farms, Coleman Family Farm, and many more. Dinner might begin with Ichiban oysters with a khadrawy date mignonette, or a bluefin tuna crudo with blood orange and chipotle. Vegetables take center stage in dishes like The Garden of Gem Hearts with avocado green goddess and Wong Farms basil, or Badger Flame beets with yellow cayenne honey and hazelnuts. Mains range from a Petaluma half chicken with chanterelles and parsnips to Flannery Beef flat iron with susitna potatoes and poblano peppers.

The restaurant also offers a daily Happy Hour (5–6:30 pm) in the bar and lounge, featuring Mexican-California dishes inspired by Chef Elijah’s mother and grandmother—think birria quesadilla, fried vermillion taco, and ichiban oysters with chile de arbol mignonette. Walk-ins only, no reservations needed.
