The story
Alpine Steakhouse has been a cultural landmark in Sarasota since it opened in 1975. It is a restaurant, a meat market (butcher shop), and a small specialty grocery all under one roof. The father-son team of Mark and Matt Rebhan runs the operation, keeping everything homemade from scratch. As they put it, “virtually nothing comes out of a box or shrink-wrapped.”
The restaurant was the first in Sarasota to specialize in prime meats of the New York City steakhouse persuasion, a tradition pioneered by revolutionary butcher Karl Ehmer. Today, the Rebhan family continues that legacy, hand-cutting USDA Prime beef and dry-aging bone-in steaks for 14 days. Their all-natural prime midwestern beef is free from added hormones or antibiotics, selected and cut by skilled butchers.
Alpine Steakhouse is known for its prime dry-aged steaks, including a 24-ounce T-Bone, a 20-ounce Cowboy Steak, and a classic Filet Mignon. But the menu goes far beyond beef. Traditional German specialties like wiener-schnitzel, sauerbraten, and bratwurst are offered alongside fresh seafood, chicken, lamb, and “crabby crab cakes.” The restaurant is also the home of the TurDucKen – a whole boneless turkey stuffed with a whole boneless chicken and a whole boneless duck, with sausage and cornbread dressing. Guy Fieri called it “a babushka doll of deliciousness” after featuring it on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.
The menu also includes Japanese Kobe burgers, hot New York Reubens, Philly cheese steaks, and homemade apple strudel. With more than 60 imported beers and an extensive fine wine selection, every palate finds something to enjoy.
Alpine Steakhouse earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2024, reflecting the depth and quality of its wine list. The restaurant has also won Sarasota Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Award for “Best Restaurant for Steak” for multiple consecutive years. Whether you visit for lunch, dinner, or to pick up prime cuts from the butcher shop, Alpine Steakhouse remains a destination for those who appreciate serious, handmade food in a warm, unpretentious setting.
