The story
Mint Premium Foods is a Michelin-recognized restaurant and gourmet market on Tarrytown’s Main Street. The Michelin Guide describes the menu as “hearty seafood and savory steaks” and calls the burgers “especially tempting.” It’s a place where a full-service dinner and a carefully curated cheese shop share the same address.
Mint is the work of Hassan and Alberta Jarane. Hassan, originally from Casablanca, Morocco, started his career as a fashion photographer before pursuing a long-held dream: opening a gourmet cheese shop and restaurant that would bring together people from across the community. Alberta, a brand strategist from San Francisco, shaped the design and customer experience. The couple moved from Brooklyn to Sleepy Hollow in 1999 and have been part of the River Towns ever since.
The space is deep and narrow, with exposed brick walls, antique artifacts, and a semi-open kitchen. Up front, the retail area is stocked with artisanal cheeses, olive oils, charcuterie, and other imports. The staff is intentionally diverse, and the restaurant hires and trains students from local high schools and colleges. As the New York Times noted, the diners seated at the communal table and smaller tables around it are as diverse as the staff.
The menu moves confidently around the Mediterranean. Starters include grilled dates stuffed with goat cheese and prosciutto, and a rotating cheese and charcuterie board selected by the owner. Entrées range from saffron seafood risotto and seared Moroccan chicken to a Wagyu beef “Mint” burger with bacon and cheddar. The drink list is equally thoughtful, with a long selection of Belgian and local beers, a homemade rosé sangria, and wines by the glass or bottle. Desserts like pistachio and ricotta cheesecake and baklava finish the meal on a high note.
Mint Premium Foods is open Wednesday through Sunday for lunch, brunch, and dinner.
